The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer to provide a critical role at Dame Phyllis Frost Centre.
About the Business Unit
The Corrections and Justice Services (CJS) group, comprising Corrections Victoria (CV), Justice Health and Justice Services, plays an integral role in developing safer and more resilient communities and in delivering a trusted justice and community safety system.
CV is responsible for the implementation of policies, programs and services that ensure the safe and secure containment of prisoners, and that seek to rehabilitate offenders by addressing the underlying causes of offending behaviour.
CV also sets strategy, policy and standards for the management of the state's system of correctional facilities whilst also developing programs for the management and rehabilitation of prisoners and the community-based supervision of offenders.
As part of the CJS group, the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre (DPFC) is a 694-bed maximum-security facility for female offenders located within the West Metropolitan Area, Department of Justice and Community.
About the Role
An Industry Officer must have the ability to manage the day-to-day operations of Prison Industries and the case management of more complex or difficult offenders. Offender management involves working in a team environment with other professionals to optimise the opportunities for rehabilitation through all aspects of the day-to-day routines, services and programs of the facility. Industry Officers model and reinforce behaviour and thinking within their team, and with prisoners that assists the individual prisoner's ability to change their behaviour and contribute in a positive manner to the community upon release.
In a vocational training environment, you will be required to train, supervise and support prisoners, model professional behaviour, maintaining professional boundaries and contribution to prison security management procedures.
Industries Textiles, Horticulture, Laundry/Food Preparation, Kitchen/Supermarket are the primary work areas for these roles. The Industry Officer may be required to work within all Vocational Areas.
Some of your duties will include:
- Running the daily operational aspects of the DFPC Industries, to achieve production targets and customer expectations, maintaining control of stock, materials, and financial records and providing an industry model workplace training environment.
- Work with other staff to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and any visitors. This includes appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, monitoring prisoners for compliance with security and occupational health and safety procedures.
- Participate as an effective team member providing quality assurance, participating in processes of continuous improvement (including LEAN 5S principles) and solution implementation, to address local issues and problems.
- Undertake searches and seizure of contraband ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures particularly with tool audits and tool security registers.
- Perform duties as directed in accordance with Commissioners Requirement's, Deputy Commissioner Instructions, Local Operating Procedures and General Manager's Instructions.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in a correctional environment.
- Commitment to working with staff, prisoners, and other service providers in the delivery of an integrated, whole of Justice approach to reducing re-offending by sound knowledge of the Prison Industries strategic plan.
- Demonstrated experience in the effective supervision of workers engaged in a range of tasks.
- Computer literate with a working knowledge of the full range of Microsoft Windows and MS Office application suite software and Oracle.
Qualifications/requirements
- Prior to commencement you will be required to obtain a current Statement of Attainment for the First Aid unit HLTAIDO11 Provide First Aid.
- A full and current Victorian driver's licence or a minimum P2 driver's licence.
- Completion of the Prison Officer Pre-service Training or a willingness to undertake and complete the provided Prison Officer Pre-Service Training is required.
- Certificate III in Correctional Practice (Custodial) or similar is desirable.
- Certificate IV Training and Assessment is desirable.
- Kitchen position/s only: Must have Use hygienic Practices for Food Safety Certificate.
