The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer – Timber to provide a critical role at Metropolitan Remand Centre
About the Business Unit
The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a 954-bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice.
About the Role
Prison Industry Staff are responsible for industry training, work, and employment in the prison environment. The role requires, maturity sound judgement and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate prisoners while working as a member of the Vocational Services Team. The Vocational Services team includes education staff, industry staff, who work together to achieve program and service outcomes in a multidisciplinary team and rehabilitative environment.
Prison Industry officers have a major role to play in ensuring compliance with prison and prison industry procedures and particularly with Occupational Health and Safety issues in industry areas. At MRC, Industry Officers will play a significant and important role in training and assessing prisoners in relevant accredited trade skills units according to the specific work environment.
An important facet of an MRC Industry Officers role, therefore, involves liaison with internal staff and external stakeholders to make informed contributions to the development and delivery of programs and processes
Custodial duties may involve conducting searches, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour in the trade areas and operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information, and preparing reports and management of critical incidents.
At MRC Industry Prison Officers play an integral role in offender management and the implementation of offender management plans. They actively participate in teams and reference groups to provide advice through written reports to Industry Supervisors and senior management. Provide brief overview of the business unit/branch and purpose of the position.
Some of your duties will include:
- As part of a team working to ensure the operational aims of the MRC Industries are achieved. These include possible commercial production internal targets and customer expectations, ordering and maintaining control of stock, materials, financial records and providing an industry model-workplace training environment.
- Effectively manage all work areas to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and any visitors. This includes appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff and prisoners for compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety, and security procedures.
- Work as part of a team in all aspects of prison industry operations including prisoner training and assessment, case management, program and service knowledge and involvement, maintenance of professional boundaries, willingness to undertake personal skills development and training, contribution to the prison and to the prison industry production procedures.
- Participate in offender management practice, procedures, and the implementation of new initiatives. Actively participate in working parties and reference groups and provide advice through formal reports to supervisors and senior management.
- As a fully qualified trades person being an effective member of a multidisciplinary team, providing Corrections Victoria's quality assurance procedures to ensure the effective management of MRC industry areas, participating in processes of continuous improvement applying solutions, to address local issues and problems.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Sound knowledge of OH&S requirements relevant to the trade area, relevant legislative responsibilities related to employment supervision and training of industry workers.
Qualifications/requirements
- All candidates must successfully have completed the Prison Officer Pre-Service training
- Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience in a Trade area related to the needs of the Furniture building/Spray painting.
