The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking an Assistant Manager – Aboriginal Separations within Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam.
This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
About the Business Unit
Corrections Victoria (CV) operates Victoria's adult prison system, seeking to provide safe and secure containment for people in custody and an environment, programs and services that support rehabilitation. CV runs 12 public prisons, one transition centre, and oversees privately operated prisons. CV provides best practice interventions that aim to reduce the risk of reoffending, including case management informed by sound risk assessment, offence specific and offence related programs, and transition and reintegration supports.
Workforce and Aboriginal Outcomes lead the design, development, implementation and monitoring of CV policies, programs and services aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the Victorian correctional system and manage initiatives related to the Safer Prisons, Safer People, Safer Communities reform agenda. The division is made up of three teams: Cultural Review and Workforce Strategy; Naalamba Ganbu and Nerrlinggu Yilam* (the Yilam); and Aboriginal Operational Strategic Supports.
About the role:
This role sits within the Yilam team which is responsible for leading the design, development, implementation and monitoring of CV policies, programs and services aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the Victorian correctional system. The Yilam seeks to do this by working in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal community, related agencies, and CV staff to understand the needs of Aboriginal people in the correctional system to ensure effective policies, programs and services are in place. The Yilam's motto is Our People, Our Priority, Our Pride.
As the Assistant Manager, Aboriginal Separations in the Yilam, you will provide internal oversight over Aboriginal people across the adult prison system who are separated from other people in custody.
You will work alongside the Aboriginal community, sentence management staff and prison staff to provide advice and expertise on the management of Aboriginal people who are separated for prolonged periods. You will also support Aboriginal people in separation by coordinating the implementation of appropriate and relevant cultural supports and driving and implementing necessary change.

Some of your responsibilities will include:
- Manage direct reports including allocation and oversight of work items and performance development planning and reviews.
- Prepare high-quality advice, reports and briefings to senior management to support culturally informed decisions impacting Aboriginal people in long term separation.
- Contribute to the review and update of departmental policy, Local Operating Procedures (LOPs) and Commissioner Requirements (CRs).
About you
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Knowledge of Corrections Victoria policies, organisation, procedures and relevant legislation and regulations.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
- Demonstrated experience providing high-quality advice, reports and briefings to senior management.
