Take action to build a fairer community
Sheriff's Office Victoria (SOV) sits within the Department of Justice and Community Safety. SOV is responsible for enforcing warrants and orders issued by the courts to recoup outstanding debts.
About the role
Sheriff's officers are the uniformed frontline staff who have the power to ensure members of the public are accountable for unpaid fines, civil debts and other offences.
Offences can include:
- businesses who have failed to honour a court-ordered payment
- a person who has failed to appear in court as required
- homeowners who have fallen behind on mortgage payments.
There are not many jobs like being a sheriff's officer. So, rather than demanding specific professional experience, we look for people who have developed the skills needed to do the job.
To be successful as a sheriff's officer, you will be:
- Motivated – you understand the importance of your work.
- Quick thinking – you can plan your next actions in the moment.
- Respectfully assertive – you are not afraid to have difficult conversations with people.
- Empathetic – you are a good listener and can build rapport with people from all backgrounds
- Resilient – you can handle a wide range of challenging situations.
‘I love my job. I love the team that I work with. I don't think I've ever worked for a place where you build bonds with people as quickly as I have here.' Alicia, Sheriff's Officer
