Ongoing (Permanent) Prison Officer positions

  • Work within a 24-hour rotating roster (across morning, afternoon, and night shifts)
  • You are guaranteed full-time working hours (on completion of your eight weeks paid training)
  • Receive penalty rates when working evening, Saturday and Sunday shifts
    • Six-monthly salary increases
    • Accrue annual leave, sick leave and superannuation


Barwon Prison

  • Based in Lara, near Geelong.
  • Maximum security, with only male prisoners.
  • Facility designed to attain the highest possible safety and security of prisoners and staff.
  • Some prisoners work in different on-site industries, such as woodwork, metalwork and in-house services, like the canteen, barber shop and bakery.
  • Prisoners also have various physical exercise stations available, such as outdoor gyms, to ensure health and wellness is maintained.
  • Modern technology, including motion sensors, night cameras and iris scanners help keep staff feeling safe and confident conducting their work


Your day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Supervising prisoner's Individual Management Plans, ensuring that the programs they are participating in are linked to their needs and goals.
  • Conducting regular patrols, searches and security-related activities.
  • Building good working relationships with both staff and prisoners through your strong communication skills.
  • Being a non-judgemental, respectful and positive influence on the prisoners.  
  • Leaving your work at the door when you leave until you return - both for confidentiality and your own mental wellbeing.

No previous experience in a similar role, or any particular qualifications are required. We hire people all across the age (18+), culture and professional work spectrum. We recruit both men and women and welcome people changing their careers or returning to work after caring for children. 


We look for candidates that have:

  • Life skills, experience and maturity; having the ability to be strong role models for prisoners.
  • Strong and adaptive verbal communication skills; being able to build rapport and earn trust from both staff and prisoners.
  • Good written communication skills; extensive reporting and case management will be a key part of your role.
  • Conflict management and problem-solving abilities; using communication to de-escalate conflict as opposed to physical force when suitable
  • Self-confidence; having the initiative to make decisions quickly and take accountability for your actions.
  • Empathy and cultural awareness; treating each individual equally and with respect, without passing judgement or forming stereotypes.
  • Integrity; being honest with strong moral principles.
  • You must also have full working rights in Australia (be an Australian Citizen, an Australian Permanent Resident or a New Zealand Citizen with permanent working rights at the time of your application).
  • You also must be available to work full-time business hours for the eight-week paid training (commencing Wednesday, 16 August).

New facial hair policy

  • All prison officers will be required (subject to a small number of exemptions) to be clean shaven for the purposes of wearing a breathing apparatus if required in an emergency.
  • Therefore, beards will no longer be permitted or moustaches that interfere with the seal of a breathing apparatus mask.
