The Department of Justice and Community Safety is now recruiting a new squad of casual and ongoing prison officers to work at Beechworth Correctional Centre (Beechworth).

As a minimum security, re-integration prison, Beechworth plays an important role in helping offenders transition back into the community at the end of their sentence. As a prison officer, you'll need to manage safety and security in a relatively open environment as well as engage with a wide variety of program staff, clinicians and service providers.

The role requires commitment, resilience and mental focus as well as the ability to get on with people, provide ongoing support and write progress reports on the caseload you'll manage. It's a job with a fine balance between security and rehabilitation, but one where your advice and recommendations can make a huge difference to someone's confidence, self-respect and long-term future.

◉ Earn an annual salary of $54,322 during training and between $56,085 - $72,022 plus super, working full time hours on a 24-hour rotating roster. Casuals earn a base rate of $33.58 per hour plus super.

◉ Enjoy generous penalty rates on night shifts, weekends and public holidays paid in addition to salary.

◉ Undergo eight weeks of paid full-time training. By the end of the program, you will feel confident and well equipped to begin your new job. Upon commencement, you will continue working towards Certificate III accreditation in Custodial Services Practice.

◉ Take advantage of access to secondment, higher duty and promotion opportunities regularly offered to top performing staff.

Beechworth is a minimum-security men's prison based in North East Victoria.

It accommodates up to 210 prisoners across self-catered communal living units, as well as two-bed units and larger dormitories. Many prisoners are serving the latter portion of their sentence and developing skills essential to transitioning back into the community successfully.

Beechworth is renowned for its community engagement programs, which include partnerships with aged and disabled care organisations, sports clubs and the Healesville Sanctuary.
