About the Business Unit

The Naalamba Ganbu Nerrlinggu Yilam (the Yilam) is responsible for leading the design, development, implementation and monitoring of Corrections Victoria (CV) policies, programs and services aimed at reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people within the Victorian correctional system. The Yilam seeks to do this by working in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal community, related agencies and CV staff to understand the needs of Aboriginal people in the justice system to ensure effective policies, programs and services are in place.

Western Plains Correctional Centre is a modern, maximum-security prison focussed on rehabilitation, housing up to 1248 people in custody. Western Plains features multi-purpose infrastructure which is adaptable to the evolving needs of CV and the people in our care. Modern amenities include medical wards, a cultural centre, and vocational training facilities. 

About the Role

The Assistant Manager, Aboriginal Services reports into the Yilam which provides services and supports across the entire prison network in Victoria.  This role is an opportunity to use your skills and experience to support Aboriginal staff and offenders in the correctional system by driving and implementing necessary change while implementing programs and services that will meet their needs. You will also identify and respond to systemic issues that impact on Aboriginal people's ability to meaningfully engage in culturally responsive pathways.

This position may require direct prisoner contact and may involve weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Agreement.

 

Some of your duties will include:

• Provide high-level, authoritative advice to senior managers of the Barwon Prisons Precinct on all matters relating to services to Aboriginal people in custody, including the promotion of self-determination.
• Provide high-level advice and direction to senior managers of the Barwon Prisons Precinct on the application of culturally responsive and safe practices across all prison operations.
• Lead the design, development, implementation and delivery of programs and services for Aboriginal people in care across the Barwon Prisons Precinct.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Aboriginal community, both society and culture, and the issues impacting it.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and work effectively with the Victorian Aboriginal community.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience in managing Aboriginal programs and services, the ability to co-ordinate and engage with a range of external stakeholders including Aboriginal community.

Qualifications

No relevant tertiary qualification is required but experience in dealing with the complex needs of Aboriginal people and community in complex environments and other relevant experience is desired.
