About us

HM Prison Barwon is a maximum-security prison located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne, and is part of the Barwon South-West Regional Structure. It is Victoria's major maximum-security prison for sentenced male prisoners.

At Barwon there are a variety of Industries in which the prisoners work to meet commercial production targets and customer expectations. The industries at Barwon include metal fabrication, powder coating, textiles, laundry and horticultural.

About the role

As a Prison Industry Officer, you will be responsible for the management and delivery of one or all of the metal fabrication, powder coating, textiles, laundry and horticultural industries within the prison, under the guidance of a Prison Industry Supervisor. You will to provide training and employment opportunities to prisoners to meet the commercial and production goals and service requirements. In the role, you will:

  • provide supervision and training to prisoners who are employed in the metal fabrication, powder coating, textiles, laundry and horticultural industries
  • effectively manage all work areas to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors
  • actively identify, refer and support prisoners' participation in integrated education into prisoner employment
  • deliver against production performance targets, industry requirements and Occupational Health and Safety compliance
  • facilitate orientation for new prisoners commencing in prisoner employment areas
  • conduct searches, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and procedures particularly with tool audits and tool security registers.

Please note you may be required to work in various industries according to operational requirements, so flexibility and adaptability is essential.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • an appropriate trade qualification and/or experience in metal fabrication, powder coating, textiles, laundry and horticultural industry
  • demonstrated experience and working knowledge of OH&S policies and procedures
  • highly developed communication, negotiation and problem solving skills, with the ability to work collaboratively to achieve work plans and goals
  • leadership, maturity, sound judgement, confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate prisoners
  • demonstrated experience in utilising computer systems for reporting and administration duties.

Applicants must have completed the Prison Officer pre training course or be willing to undertake the next available course.
