About us

The Metropolitan Remand Centre (MRC) is a 954 bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice.

The Offender Services team, within MRC, plays a crucial role by assisting with prisoner welfare services, referrals, personal development programs and through-care services for this short-term, transient population. The Offender Services Unit is also responsible for unit projects and reviews, the coordination of pre-release programs, and delivery of specific youth and cultural programs and services for prisoners.

About the role

As the Justice Officer, Offender Services, you will:

  • under direction, provide individual assessments and referrals which are responsive to individual prisoner needs
  • under direction, facilitate group prisoner orientation sessions and information sessions
  • follow up and appropriately respond to prisoner welfare requests in a timely manner
  • act as a key point of contact for prisoners and Unit staff in relation to prisoner welfare and program matters
  • liaise with a range of internal staff and external agencies to assist in the provision of program/appropriate referrals.

This position will require direct prisoner contact and may involve weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.

Please note there is 1 x Ongoing, Full time and 1 x Fixed Term, Full Time (until 1 September, 2019) available.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • demonstrated proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • experience in or an understanding of working within a Correctional environment
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to make case notes and prepare a range of documents for a variety of stakeholders
  • the ability to solve problems using operational knowledge and experience providing alternative  solutions.
