About us

The Metropolitan Remand Centre is a 1006 bed maximum-security facility for unsentenced male offenders located within the West Metropolitan Region, Department of Justice and Community Safety.

About the role

The Aboriginal Wellbeing Officer (AWO) role was established under the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement, as a response to the findings of the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.  AWO's are part of Corrections Victoria's commitment to reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the criminal justice system and to ensuring that Aboriginal Victorians are ensuring the same justice outcomes as the broader Victorian community.

The AWO will provide ongoing welfare, advocacy and support for Aboriginal prisoners – including providing assistance in accessing appropriate pre- and post-release programs and entitlements to assist with their reintegration into the community. Some of your main responsibilities include:

  • providing culturally appropriate counsel and support to Aboriginal prisoners and advocating on their behalf where appropriate
  • providing ongoing assistance to Aboriginal prisoners in accessing appropriate programs and entitlements to assist with their re-integration into the community
  • providing prison management and staff with specialist advice on the delivery of culturally relevant services and the development of culturally relevant protocols for Aboriginal prisoners, including the establishment of protocols with relevant Aboriginal community organisations and groups.

This position will require direct prisoner contact and may involve weekend and public holiday work, remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you will have:

  • experience in or understanding of working within a correctional environment
  • a demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture and the issues impacting on it
  • a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal Community.
