It also develops programs for the management and rehabilitation of prisoners and the community-based supervision of offenders.

About the role

As the Strategic Advisor, you will be a key member of the Commissioner's office. Through sound advice and strategic direction, you will provide organisational leadership that supports the Commissioner and promotes Corrections Victoria's broader strategy and values.

The role operates within a complex and dynamic environment that requires a capacity to exercise good judgement, effectively liaise with key stakeholders and undertake effective, timely actions. Whether you're from a commercial or government background doesn't matter - we need someone who can make good calls and be accountable for them.

What you will do

  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current internal and external issues and risks that impact the Corrections environment and be able to respond, investigate and advise in a responsive manner.

About you

We need someone who has proven they can perform well under pressure. You will already be aware of the key issues that impact Corrections Victoria, particularly within legislative, social, political and industrial frameworks. You will also be someone who excels in:

  • attention to detail - review communications proposals, ensuring they conform to the department's branding guidelines and broader strategy
  • interpersonal skills - build rapport and trust quickly, altering your approach as the situation demands, and diffusing difficult situations in a manner that puts stakeholders at ease
  • organisational awareness - use acute understanding of the organisational environment to build partnerships, address emerging issues, and advise and negotiate with senior management to achieve strategic goals
  • influence and negotiation - move senior stakeholders in new directions using strong negotiation techniques in contentious situations
  • written communication - develop business plans, policy frameworks, program development documents and briefs on highly complex issues, demonstrating a high level of knowledge and expertise.
